Very early yesterday morning, Kiera and I set out on a very important mission. We were flying to El Paso to wish Grandma a Happy Birthday. Now, this was no ordinary birthday...it was her 60th! With a little help from Papa, Kevin's parents, and my sister I was able to really make my mom's day. It went a little like this...
We landed late at 10:30. The Simpsons picked us up and took me to my mom's. I got Kiera out of the car seat and rang the doorbell.
No one answered!
Hmmm...I thought to myself as the dogs barked incessantly!
I rang it again.
No one answered.
I knew my mom was there, because my sister had just talked to my mom trying to invite her to lunch (our original surprise was for me to just appear at lunch). My mom declined saying she did not want to celebrate her birthday, she just wanted to paint (they are painting their house).
So now I am thinking..what the heck am I supposed to do now? I didn't want to barge in to her house.
So I called her on my cell.
The phone convo went like this....
"Hello?"
"Hey Mom, Whatcha doin'?"
"Painting."
"Oh, I think there is a package on your front porch, maybe you should go check!"
"OK, but why didn't you just bring it in with you next week?"
"Well today is your birthday...I didn't want to wait"
Meanwhile, I can tell she is going up the stairs to get to the front door. She later told me this made perfect since that there would be a package because she had heard the dogs going bananas!
Right before she opened the door she said, "I decided to celebrate my birthday this weekend"
And she opened the door! "AHHHHH!!!!!" She screamed. She had no clue.
Now, you could tell she was shocked. She was in her pajamas and you could tell she did NOT expect me at the door. She also told me later that she thought I was my sister for a second, and then she realized it was me!
Kiera and I sang her Happy Birthday. Then I shipped Boo off with the Simpsons. My mom got dressed and we met my sister for lunch at Red Lobster. My mom and I were talkng about what to do with the rest of our afternoon (basically we knew it would involve pedicures) when my sister said, "Well you will need to go to a place that has at least three chairs because I am coming too! She had the rest of the afternoon off. My mom put her head in her hands and cried.
We spent the afternoon at the mall getting a pedicure and doing a little shopping. That afternoon I picked up Kiera and we all went to a nice little Italian restaurant for a family dinner.
We had made her day!
It was worth every minute!

Your mom is lucky to have you. I hope she had a great day!
Yipee! Sounds like it was a huge success ALL THE WAY AROUND!! I am so glad you had the chance to make your mom's birthday very special and that the family was all able to be a integral part of the surprise!
How fun! I love birthday surprises like that - and it's so sweet that she was so overwhelmed! I'm sure Kevin's parents had a great day too playing with Miss Kiera!
